THE CASA MAGNA STORY

Both houses had been sitting abondonded for 9 years after the Government took possesion of the property when Pablo Escobar was killed in 1993. When we acquired the property it was a bare concrete shell covered in grafiti. It had survived hurricanes, years of weather exposure and had military men with guns living on the roof.

What we thought would be a 3 month renovation, turned into an 18 month project that had us literally starting from the ground up. The design took shape organiclly, integrating mosaic ceramic, drift wood and river rocks to recreate Amanasala's signature bohemian-chic style.

We had such an amazing canvas to start with. Our biggest challenge was often how to make the spaces smaller - the complete opposite of most house renovations - purely because the scale of the place was just so outrageous.

But Casa Magna has been transformed in more ways than one. From being the house of one of the most ruthless, ambitious, and powerful drug lords in history... into a beautiful hotel that celebrates love and life through weddings, yoga retreats and idyllic relaxing escapes.

On completion of the renovations in 2005, Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso was brought in to spritually cleanse and bless the house and the doors were opened for business.

With the attention to detail, views, majestic size and history make this a unique place to stay in Tulum. We invite you to experience the reincarnation of Casa Magna.
